bio Onica Cupido, owner of Beaded Zen Designs in New York City, was born in Guyana, South America but lived in the New York City Area since age 5. Like most artistic types her creative interests started in childhood with drawing, painting and anything else that caught awakened her inner muse. She began her learning process at the High School of Fashion Industries and then went on to the Fashion Institute of Technology. While mostly self taught in jewelry design, she's been talking classes and learning different techniques ever since. As the jewelry designer for Beaded Zen Designs, she working primarily with semi-precious stones, sterling silver and 14kt gold-filled. She believes in using gemstones for their therapeutic meanings and colors as well as their natural beauty. Why? Because she believes you should feel as great as you look. artist statement In 2000, I started my company Beaded Zen Designs. The name Beaded Zen comes from the feeling I experience when working on a project. There�s something spiritually, emotionally and mentally soothing about working with gemstones. I truly believe that jewelry made with gemstones are therapeutic. I mainly use precious metals like sterling silver and 14k gold-filled components mixed with pearls and natural semi-precious gemstones like amethyst, garnet, citrine and turquoise to name a few. My main ideas usually come from current fashion trends but are expanded to take on a new dimension, which brings a new energy and feel. Most of my work is simple in style and look with shapes that are pure in form with unusual combinations. These designs are perfect for the office, an evening event or the weekend. My handcrafted designs appeal to those looking for jewelry with simplicity, elegance and meaning.
